Dialogue Box, Hollywood Version Trying to appear calm, Mr. Schulman quickly resorted to his black I.B.M. ThinkPad 240 notebook computer. He punched "boxing" into a word- and concept-association brainstorming program called IdeaFisher, going through the response "fighting/fighting sports" until he got to "sticks and stones will break my bones." So I'm sitting reading the Age (Tuesday 4th february 2003 Section: Next page 10) and there is an article about a guy Mark Billinghurst using virtual imagery and augmented realties. Using an interface called MagicBook and hand held glasses he overlays virtual information onto real books. Billinghurst is the Director of New Zealands Human Interface Technology Lab HIT Lab NZ http://www.hitlabnz.org/ see the article Turner, Adam Paging Mr Vader, The Age: Melbourne 4th February 2003 Section: Next page 10 Sunday, February 02, 2003
I was thinking this morning about persistent computing, imagine if you will a headset display projecting your virtual life over your actual life. Say you kept an online diary then in the overlay your diary would appear as a file floating over the desk in your study. If you were in another room or place then a simple search would bring the diary to you. To acheive this all files would require extra metadata no only describing what a file or application is but where it is. Global positioning. An extension of this would apply to file sharing. Currently if I own a CD and lend it to a friend then I don't have possesion of the CD even though I own it. The CD has physical representation and a global position. The problem with music file sharing is that I still retain a copy of the file. So under my new plan the file contains not only contents and place metadata but lender and borrower data. I loan you a file my version gets temporarily checked out and your version checks in. Just like a library catalogue system (Amlib from Infovision comes to mind) the file has a Permanent location (with the owner) and a Temporary location (with the borrower) A time limit could be set that transfers ownership if the file is not checked back in say six months. Recall options would transfer the rights back to the owner. A bit like a public library. Once back with the owner the file can then be lent to somebody else. |
